RBJ Residences
Design for a vibrant community
RBJ Residences combines more than fifty years of Austin history with a newly redeveloped senior-living campus on Lady Bird Lake. My work has supported that transition across print, events, leasing, fundraising, wayfinding and community communications.

Redevelopment of historic residential tower

One campus. A lot to communicate.
RBJ serves residents across two buildings, different age requirements and a wide range of programs and services. At the same time, the organization communicates with prospective residents, family members, visitors, community partners, donors and public agencies. The design challenge has been less about creating individual pieces and more about making a complex organization easier to understand—while keeping the communication warm, accessible and distinctly connected to the community it serves.

A landmark begins its next chapter.
The original Rebekah Baines Johnson Center opened in 1972. After the construction of The Ladybird allowed residents to relocate, the historic tower underwent a major renovation and reopened in 2025 with 224 affordable apartments for seniors 62 and older. For the grand opening, I developed a coordinated set of materials that helped tell both sides of the story: what RBJ had become and where it had come from. The work included the event program, large-format displays, historical storytelling, service information and environmental pieces used throughout the celebration.

Wayfinding challenges
The rebuilt campus created an unusual navigation problem: two connected buildings, three elevator systems, different floor ranges and unit numbering that isn't immediately intuitive. I developed a simplified site map and unit-number system to help residents, guests and delivery drivers understand which building, elevator and floor they needed before setting out. The resulting guide breaks navigation into three steps: Find the building. Find the elevator and floor. Find the unit.

Useful design, wherever needed.
What began as individual communication projects grew into an ongoing design relationship touching almost every part of the organization—from welcoming a visitor to explaining a floor plan, celebrating a historic reopening, leasing an apartment or asking a donor to support resident services. Different audiences. Different formats. One community that needed to make sense.
